ST. LUKES PURPLE-LEAF PLUM
Prunus cerasifera
Thanks again to breeders at the University of Florida, we now have a Purple-leafed Plum that will withstand the hot summers of the Deep South. In the past, northern varieties such as Newport, Thundercloud or Krauter-Vesuvius were too high chill to grow well in Florida and along the coasts. But St. Lukes is very low chill and will maintain its garnet leaf color as far south as Orlando and Tampa, throughout the heat of August! In spring it has a profusion of small white blossoms, then leafs out with its bright garnet leaves and in the fall its color deepens to a rich magenta.
St. Lukes is a tremendous accent plant and adaptable to a wide range of conditions. No yard should be without one!
